August- The busiest month on the farming calendar!🙌🏼

It’s been another full-on month here on the farm, with harvest finally wrapped up. Yields were worryingly poor in some of our spring crops this year, although some of our winter crops performed well, helping to balance things out.

With harvest finished, we’ve quickly moved on to the next jobs🌾
We’ve started mole ploughing, a process that creates underground channels to help improve drainage and relieve compaction, as well as getting stuck into muck and compost spreading — returning valuable organic matter and nutrients to the soil to help build soil health for future crops.🪱💚

The dry weather has meant the composting side of the farm has been relatively quiet. With the green covers drying and burning off, the composting process has slowed considerably without enough moisture.☀️

Meanwhile, cultivations are well underway, preparing seedbeds and soils for next year’s crops, and we’ve been busy drilling our oilseed rape - getting next year’s crop safely in the ground🚜
August may be one of the busiest months of the year, but it’s also when the work for next year really begins🙌🏼💚

Introducing Colin - born right here in Fulstow at Casswell’s Eco Green Compost. 🌱

Earlier this week, we welcomed the newest member of the Casswell’s family: Colin, our new mascot.

To celebrate his arrival, Casswell’s Managing Director James Casswell was joined by British Garden Centres Founder Charles Stubbs, Managing Director Amy Stubbs and members of the British Garden Centres management team.

The occasion brought together two generations of local farming families, making it a fitting celebration of the longstanding relationships, shared values and local roots behind both businesses.

And this is only the beginning for Colin who will soon be making an appearance at British Garden Centres.

The impact of this dry weather 🌾☀️

We finished harvesting yesterday, and this year has really highlighted just how challenging prolonged dry weather can be for farming.

Across our spring crops, we are significantly down on yields, and we’re also seeing a noticeable loss in quality. Unfortunately, this can mean some of the grain doesn’t meet the criteria required for certain markets, adding another layer of pressure to an already difficult season.

The dry conditions haven’t just affected the farming side of the business either. We’re also seeing material losses on the compost side, with the lack of moisture having an impact on how materials behave, process and perform.

In many ways, we are relatively lucky compared with a lot of farmers. Half of our farm is on the Wolds, while the other half is extremely heavy land. That heavier ground held onto moisture for a little longer, giving the crops a better chance to establish and get growing again through the spring. Without that, the impact could have been even greater.

And the conditions have brought another very real risk — field fires. We’ve had two field fires this year, something we haven’t experienced for a number of years. It’s a stark reminder of just how dry and vulnerable the land has become.

Farming is always about working with what the weather gives us, but seasons like this really show how much of our success is ultimately out of our hands. 🌾

Why do we apply compost to our land?🤔🌍💚

1. Minimal Aroma- Unlike most organic materials and manures our compost has very little aroma due to using natural materials🪵☘️🚜

2.Improves Soil Health- by adding organic matter we are improving soil structure, increasing water retention and enhancing draining💦🪱

3. Provides Nutrients- Contains slow releasing essential nutrients to help crops grow while reducing synthetic fertilisers.🌾

4. Supports Beneficial Soil Life- helps encourage earthworms and microorganisms which also improve cycling and overall soil fertility🐛🪱

These all lead to healthier soils, better crop yields and a more sustainable way of farming🌍💚

🍞 Every meal starts with a farmer. 🍽️

When people think about farming, they often see fields of crops—but those fields become so much more. They become the food and drink we all enjoy every day.

Here's what our 1,400-hectare family farm produces:

🌾 480 hectares of milling wheat produce around 2,880 tonnes of flour—enough to bake an incredible 3.8 million loaves of bread.

🍺 Our barley crop is enough to produce around 14 million litres of beer.

🌼 Our oilseed rape produces approximately 1,485,000 litres of rapeseed oil, found in kitchens and food products across the country.

🐑The sheep we have on the farm over winter produce enough high-quality British lamb for around 32,000 meals.

🌸Our farm also produces 1 million bags of sustainable compost per year too! Along side that the bee's are working tirelessly to produce 1,600 litres of honey.🐝

From the moment a seed is planted to the food on your table, there's months of hard work, careful planning and dedication behind every harvest.

We're incredibly proud to produce food while caring for the countryside for future generations.

🌱 Farming is always evolving, and so are we.

Like many family farms, we've had to adapt to help secure a sustainable future for both our business and the land we care for.

In 2022, James launched our composting enterprise, creating an environmentally friendly diversification that works hand in hand with our farming operation. It has allowed us to take some of our more intensive arable land out of production, introducing a five-year rotational break crop that helps restore and improve our soils.

Today, 310 hectares of our farm are dedicated to environmentally friendly crops, helping to build healthier soils, improve biodiversity and create valuable habitats for farmland birds, pollinators and other wildlife.

We're also proud to be home to around 20 million bees, whose hard work plays a vital role in pollinating crops and supporting the rich ecosystem around our farm.

For us, sustainability isn't a buzzword—it's about making decisions today that will protect our farm for generations to come. By combining innovation with traditional farming values, we're working to produce food responsibly while leaving the land in a better condition than we found it.

That's what modern farming looks like, and we're proud to share it with you during #Farm24.

Colin enjoys long naps in the garden centre, helping things grow, and telling everyone he's "well grounded." He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is full of natural talent and never backs down from getting his hands dirty.
